Where to watch World Cup matches in Maple Leaf

Sure, you can head downtown starting Friday to rub shoulders with the hard-core World Cup fans as early as 4:30 a.m. at bars such as Fado, which our partner The Seattle Times says was named “Best Soccer Bar” in the nation by the U.S. Soccer Federation last year.

Or you can sleep in a couple of hours and head to one of our local pubs to enjoy the world’s most-watched sports tournament with fans who also are neighbors.

Although none of Maple Leaf’s bars plans to open before the sun rises, Ram Restaurant & Brewery at Northgate Mall, 401 N.E. Northgate Way, Ste. 1102, is your best bet with a 7 a.m. opening throughout the monthlong World Cup. It also will offer a special breakfast menu, and discounts on bloody marys and Modelo Especial beer.

Also braving the early hours is Roosevelt Ale House, 8824 Roosevelt Way N.E., which will open at 7 a.m. on days the U.S. team plays, and all other match days at 11 a.m.

Another earlier riser is Cooper’s Alehouse, 8065 Lake City Way N.E., which plans to open at 10 a.m. throughout the World Cup and offer happy hour prices all day until 6 p.m., including food options off of its happy hour menu and $1 off pints.

And although the Old Fifth Avenue Tavern, 8507 Fifth Ave. N.E., doesn’t have any specific plans to open early for the World Cup, the staff would consider it if there was a group interested that’s big enough to make it worth their while.

Other nearby bars with big plans for the World Cup include Atlantic Crossing, 6508 Roosevelt Way N.E.; St. Andrews Bar & Grill, 7406 Aurora Ave. N.; Kangaroo & Kiwi Pub, 7305 Aurora Ave. N.;  Prost!, 7311 Greenwood Ave. N.; and All Nations Soccer Bar, 930 N. 130th St.
