A staircase on Northeast 97th Street that links 19th and 20th avenues northeast where the road ends to vehicle traffic is under construction, but not for long.

Karen Johnston, a crew chief with the Seattle Department of Transportation, said the project to update the staircase to meet new standards began June 23 and shouldn’t take longer than a month.

The project, part of the city’s Bridging the Gap levy, will widen the staircase to 6 feet, 10 inches, and add a double-handrail on both sides.
