On Saturday, the neighborhood is invited to the Maple Leaf Community Garden at 529 N.E. 103rd St. for some serious weed pulling. Show up from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. if you’d like to help, or give Seattle community garden coordinator Kenya Fredie a call at 206-684-0264 to learn more.

You also can learn more about the community garden from a previous post.

And if one day of weed pulling isn’t enough for you, there’s a also a work party at Thornton Creek Park No. 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. The park is located at Northeast 106th Street and Eighth Avenue Northeast.

Need a little fun after a weekend of work? The Young Drama Program at Seattle Public Theatre at the Bathhouse Theatre brings you “The Secret in the Wings” this weekend, with performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday:

A sophisticated, wildly imaginative voyage into the dark heart of European fairy tales. This heady, haunting and humorous play weaves elements from Beauty and the Beast with four lesser known stories into a dream-like exploration of the darker side of human impulses. Journey further “into the woods” than Sondheim dared to take you with The Secret in the Wings — full of breathtaking theatricality, snatches of song, and intricate storytelling.

Admission is free, although donations will be accepted for the education program.

And be sure to stop by and show your support for the exhibit Northwest Puppet Center is featuring at the Seattle Center Pavilion through Aug. 1, “The World of Puppetry:  Treasures from The Cook/Marks Collection.” The free exhibit, which will feature more than 5,000 puppets from around the world and spanning centuries, opens tonight from 6-9, then from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

And don’t fret if you miss your chance to see the show while it’s at Seattle Center: Even more of the collection will be on display at the Northwest Puppet Center, 9123 15th Ave. N.E., when the 2010-11 season begins in November.

Here’s more weekend fun from some of our news partners:

  • Wedgwood View: Fly a kite at KiteFest from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Magnuson Park. Activities include kite demonstrations, kite building booths for the kids, music and family wellness vendors.
