In addition to the events below, try this block party Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Lakeview Free Methodist Church, 9412 15th Ave. N.E.

Think health this weekend – although you might want to wait until after visiting to the mobile food vendors that will be parked just south of Thornton Place for lunch today.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can get a gourmet natural burger (“natural” means healthy, right?) from Buns on Wheels, followed by a scoop of Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream, whose truck also will be parked at the Washington Dental Building, 9706 Fourth Ave. N.E., from noon to 2 p.m. today.

Then, on Saturday, you can start thinking health:

  • Let’s start with the healthiest: a Health Fair sponsored by The Vitamin Shoppe, the newest addition to Thornton Place at 301 N.E. 103rd St. The event, which takes place at the store from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature a number of local businesses, including Mieko’s Gym, Sound Chiropractic, LA Fitness, American Athlete and Sound Sleep Health. Everyone will receive a free gift bag of samples just for walking in that day, and door prizes will include a $100 gift certificate and workout supplements.
  • Also on Saturday, Sustainable Northeast Seattle is holding a sustainable living festival called Planet: Home, that aims to help participants learn how to reduce their environmental footprint. The event, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hunter Tree Farm, 7744 35th Ave. N.E., will feature free workshops, speakers and demonstrations to help you learn about solar cooking, bicycle repair, cheese-making, growing your own tea, tool repair, sod replacement, worm bins and much more.
  • Because safety is also part of staying healthy, we’ll also lump in the Life Jacket Sale at Evans Pool, 7201 E. Green Lake Drive N., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Coast Guard-approved life jackets will be available from Seattle Parks and Recreation for $20 in sizes infant to youth large, and $30 for teens to adult size XXL.  The person for whom the jacket is being purchased must be present for proper fitting. For more information, contact Diane Jones at 206-684-7440 or diane.jones@seattle.gov.
  • And on Sunday, you’re invited to support your local farmers markets by attending An Incredible Feast – Where the Farmers are the Stars, a fundraiser that will support the Good Farmer Fund and educational programming by the  Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance. The sixth annual event, from 5-8 p.m. at the site of the University District Farmers Market, the University Heights Center for the Community, 5031 University Way N.E., will feature 28 of Seattle’s best chefs cooking unique dishes with ingredients from 30 local family farms. Guests are invited to sample the gourmet dishes along with local wines and beers, and meet the chefs and farmers behind the food. Tickets are $80 or $150 for a couple.

What else is going on this weekend that Maple Leaf residents should know about?
