Cooper's bike rack is back

Cooper’s Alehouse, 8065 Lake City Way N.E., was gushing yesterday on Twitter that it finally got a new bike rack after “months (and months and months) of waiting.”

It looks like the city has cycling on the brain. Not only is it installing bike racks around the city, but also bike corrals, such as the one recently installed in front of R+E Cycles at 5627 University Way N.E., according to our news partner U District Daily.

I’m not sure how much room Maple Leaf has for the more-elaborate bike racks, though, especially if the Seattle Department of Transportation follows through with its plans to remove 10 blocks of parking on Roosevelt Way Northeast. U District Daily explains:

As part of the Bicycle Master Plan adopted by Seattle in 2007, the city will continue to install on-street bike parking.  These corrals usually eliminate one space for vehicle parking.  SDOT hopes to have six of these corrals up around the city by the end of this year.

Can you think of a practical space for a bike corral in Maple Leaf? Where else would you like to see new bike racks in the neighborhood?

  1. I used the corral this afternoon and it’s great. Nate’s right though, there really isn’t a spot in the nabe at this time where one could be put to good use, possibly the Northgate Library/Community Center or Mall. Cafe Kopi in a few years taking a lane of Lake City Way for bike parking, that I’d love to see, but first a streetcar line to Lake City.

  2. How about the city exercises eminent domain over the empty lot where Cafe News used to be, puts a bike corral in there and leases the space out for farmer markets, craft markets, etc. Anything but but the concrete foundation and metal fence there now.

Actually, that would be a good story for the blog…what is the deal with that property?

  3. Despite the fact that I am a daily bike commuter and a supporter of the Roosevelt “road diet,” I can’t really think of a Maple Leaf location that would serve enough cyclists to need this large of a bike rack.

We don’t really have the density/diversity of businesses that would create this much cycle traffic. *Maybe* in the Judy Fu’s/Maple Leaf HW/Reckless area? Frankly Reckless already has a nice deck area to park a bike…
