The 'Surge' in Thornton Creek stars on KUOW

This weekend, we have the opportunity to celebrate Thornton Creek with a nature walk from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday that starts at Meadowbrook Ponds.

But a news program broadcast this morning on 94.9-FM/KUOW reminds us that Thornton Creek is worthy of celebration every day.

On the public radio station’s The Art of Our City program, Marcie Sillman ventures into our neck of the woods, where many of us likely take the art that surrounds us for granted too often.

She spoke with artist Benson Shaw, who is behind the art installation called “Surge” that’s visible along the recently daylighted part of Thornton Creek that flows right through the middle of Thornton Place.

The installation includes the posts and pipes on the west side of Thornton Place where Thornton Creek first reaches daylight; the “Wiggle Posts” on the northeast corner of the lot where the creek heads back underground; and then there are the “Bad Buoys,” which float in the middle of the creek.

From the transcript:

Sillman: “It’s not a park, but it sure feels like one.”

Shaw: “It’s kind of a little hidden jewel.”

What’s your favorite part of Thornton Creek? Don’t forget the beaver pond in Thornton Creek Park No. 6!
