Months in the making, the three new crosswalks on Roosevelt Way Northeast at Northeast 90th, 92nd and 97th streets are arriving.

Here, the one outside Maple Leaf Ace Hardware is going up Monday morning. The project has long been a priority of the Maple Leaf Community Council.

  1. One way I’ve found that gets cars to stop is if you have an LED flashlight with you on a walk, just flash it at oncoming cars. Even by daylight drivers tend to notice and are more likely to stop.

  2. FYI, the orange flags are provided not by the city but through the individual actions of fellow Maple Leaf residents. They buy these with their own money, so please be watchful if you see anyone forget and carry them down the block.

  3. (Years) in the making. We’ve been agitating for that crosswalk at 90th since before I joined the Maple Leaf CC in 2004/05. Thanks to SDOTs’ Brian Doughty who made our case for this crosswalk and the other two.

  4. HOORAY! I don’t get around as quickly as I used to and there seem to be too many driver-transplants from some land where cars always rule the right of way. Hopefully we will see a return of old time Maple Leaf civility and neighborly manners along Roosevelt.

  5. Pedestrians will still be forced to stand out in traffice & pray someone stops. The flags help a bit (if one’s available) but they not visible in the dark. Better than nothing, I guess, but I still think ONE more full-stop traffic light would have been a better bang for the buck.

  6. gb, I must admit…I kind of like that idea. Getting across Roosevelt with toddler and dog has been very daunting at times. Crossing flags as javelin or just hand me the tire tack strip for those that zoom by.

  7. Take that flag and show your intent, and any sane driver should stop for you. If not, heave said flag like a javelin at the jackass driver. Aim for the head or tires. 😀
