Portions of the neighborhood lost power overnight for over 2 1/2 hours during an unexpected squall line of thunderstorm.

The outage started shortly after midnight, when high winds gusting to 23 mph arrived, blowing limbs from trees and trees into power lines. One tree fell into this Northgate home at 120th St. and 9th Ave.

The residents escaped the house through a window (photo from KIRO-TV’s interview with the homeowner here.) Fortunately, no one was injured.

KIRO reported more than 8,500 people in Seattle lost power, tweeting about 1 a.m.:  “Wind just the blew the mast off of one of our live trucks in our Belltown parking lot.”

Aside from Maple Leaf, Northgate lost power, as did Green Lake and other north Seattle neighborhoods.

This morning the state Department of Transportation reports that Interstate 5 express lanes will open late “due to a power outage in the Northgate area.” Update: express lanes now open southbound.
