Suspected burglar is charged, but on the loose

A convicted felon who police think may have been involved in multiple burglaries in North Seattle has been charged with one of them, but has not yet been arrested.

Brandon Blum, 24, is charged with the residential burglary Nov. 22 of a home in the 6200 block of Brooklyn Avenue Northeast, according to court papers. In that case, a brick had been thrown through the window pane on a rear door.

The returning homeowner actually caught the burglar inside her home coming down the stairs. He said, “oh, shit,” and ran out through the back door, the court papers say.

Detective Michael Cruzan writes in the court documents:

Throughout much of October and November, 2010, North Precinct Detectives have observed what appears to be a sizable pattern of residential burglaries occurring in the Ravenna and Maple Leaf neighborhoods of Seattle. In the short span of only three to four weeks, over twenty residential burglaries have been investigated in this limited area. Nearly all occur during the day when the occupants are away. Many of the homes have been entered by using a brick or a stone to break a rear window. The theft of jewelry has been reported in many of the burglaries.

Blum is being investigated for this series of burglaries and is expected to have at least one other felony charge pending.

If you’d like to learn more about the recent rise in crime and what you can do to protect your property, come to next month’s Maple Leaf General Meeting, where the Community Council hopes to address crime and other Maple Leaf issues. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Olympic View Elementary, 504 N.E. 95th St.

  1. My house was burglarized in exactly this way (rear window broken) by someone on October first of this year – I live near NSCC. I am now pretty sure that it was this guy. I hope that the police find him soon.

    What an ass.

  2. If you think burglaries and auto theft are a problem… On Roosevelt Way in broad daylight I went outside only to encounter a group of teenage boys openly smoking pot. They didn’t try to hide it or seem the least bit concerned. It’s not the first group of teens I’ve had to deal with either. What is happening to our neighborhood and what kind of people are raising these little criminals?

The year before last I had to report a young couple who were shooting up drugs and leaving syringes on our property. What you need to be blogging about is all the trouble Maple Leaf park will attract. People openly drink and use drugs in Froula Park which is only 3 acres. Imagine 24 acres to keep the North precinct occupied. Apparently no one thought of that.

I feel like we’re living West Seattle. Something has to be done.

  3. Our car, which was stolen on the night of Dec 6, was found on Dec 15 in Fremont, just off Aurora Ave. The car had been driven off-road and has minor damage – taillight lens, trim piece, scratch, etc. – but of course minor damage to a car is still major $ to repair. It was filthy inside and out and the car stereo and amplifier were stolen. It was driven until empty and parked illegally, which I suppose is a mercy – if it had been parked legally, it might have taken days or weeks before someone called on it. So it can be repaired, could have been worse, but not a good thing to deal with at any time of the year.

  4. By the way, because there’s no way to know whether these profiles actually belong to the suspect, we had to delete the Facebook/MySpace links a reader provided because it’s potentially accusing somebody of a crime who is innocent.

  5. There is a Brandon Blum from Seattle myspace page with pics, google it. Can’t guarantee it’s the same guy, but age is listed as 24.

  6. It would be nice to see a photograph of Brandon Blum. The homeowner who has seen him should check Facebook to see if he’s there.
