Copper thieves active in Maple Leaf?

Update Sunday afternoon: After seeing the comments, below, we’ve mailed Seattle City Light to learn more. Hope to hear from them Monday.

————–

Nick emails: “Down the hill from the MLL Tower, some enterprising soul has snipped the copper grounding wire from the telephone/power poles on the entire block on 89th between 17th and 20th. Have any other streets been hit?”

We haven’t seen any, but assume copper thieves are taking the wire for scap value.

Any other reports?

  1. I noticed the missing ground wires on two poles near our house on Brooklyn Ave NE, btwn 75th and 77th St. I was awakened late one night and watched a white import with an aftermarket noisemaker exhaust parked next to a pole, directly underneath the street light. I assumed the driver was taking a leak, but he may have been cutting wires. I have seen this white import in the neighborhood since this incident.

  2. Thank you, Sandra! I called QWEST a few weeks ago about problems with our DSL connection. I even asked the man if there’s such a thing as an internet rush hour since evenings are a problem. He didn’t say anything about checking the grounding wire, though.
Glad to hear that the SCL repair crew is prompt…I know from experience that their graffiti crew is also very prompt!

  3. FYI – This morning I called SCL’s customer service about the ground wire that’s been missing in front of my house for months, and five hours later I arrived home to discover that the wire has been replaced. Very impressed with SCL.

  4. They are missing in front of my house and on several other poles on my street, NE 86th St between 15th Ave and 20th Ave.

This is a safety hazard (there is a transformer on the pole in front of my house, so heaven forbid it should ever be struck by lightning!).

In addition, the people at QWEST tell me that the lack of a grounding wire is the reason my DSL internet connection stops working every night around sunset, when everyone turns on their lights and TVs. Apparently, there is so much noise in the system that noise from the electricity wires gets into the phone wires.

I have been complaining to QWEST for months with little success, and am ready to switch carriers. I would LOVE to call the utility company to complain, but haven’t done the research to figure out who to call.

Does anyone else have this problem?

  5. They are missing from the big metal high voltage poles on 8th, from 92nd and for several blocks to the south. Could be more missing, I didn’t walk past 92nd.
