Over the years, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist David Horsey has made a name for himself not only locally, but also worldwide through his commentary and cartooning in the Seattle P-I.

And it turns out the apple did not fall far from the tree. Although you may never have heard of her, David Horsey’s mother, Jeanne Horsey, also is an avid artist, and for the first time their art will be exhibited together at our own Aljoya Thornton Place, 450 N.E. 100th St.

You’re invited to the opening reception from 4-6:30 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 17, although reservations are requested by calling 206-306-7920.

In total, more than 15 David Horsey pieces and 10 Jeanne Horsey works will be on display.

In a news release from Aljoya Thornton Place, Jeanne Horsey’s work is described as mixed media:

Horsey points out that his mother encouraged creativity for him at an early age and often inspired his work through her fearless, artistic examples.

“She is the true artist in the family,” says Horsey of his mother. “She has an artistic spirit. She is always trying new things.”

Prior to retirement, Jeanne Horsey worked for Seattle Public Schools supporting learning for blind students through use of brail. Some of her works include metal braille sheets with paint, creating rare and interesting textures.

The exhibit, which is part of Aljoya Thornton Place’s ongoing art series, is open to the public and runs through February 21, 2012.

  1. Ooooo, I still have my favourite David Horsey up on my bulletin board at home. It has four or five people standing in the rain with a stunned look on their faces. In the corner is a box that reads (and I am paraphrasing a bit) “June 23, 1991. Recent Californian immigrants all come to the startling same realization:” and then one of the characters is saying “It really DOES always rain in Washington.”

Love David Horsey. He is not just an exceptional editorial cartoonist, but he is a very thoughtful speaker. If you ever get to hear him talk about his experiences and his thoughts on what is happening in journalism, listen up. Pay attention.
