Seth Howard, owner of the Last Drop Bottle Shop, emailed us this morning to let us know that somebody smashed through the glass door of the store at  8016 15th Ave. N.E. between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

He tells us:

Follows same crime at little Caesars last week.  Who next?  Coopers?  All about pets? (Editor’s note: All The Best Pet Care was burglarized last February.)

Last month the front door at Cafe Piccolo, 9400 Roosevelt Way N.E., was smashed. In  November it was the Hudson New American Public House, 8014 15th Ave. N.E. (next door to the Last Drop and also owned by Howard). Those reports are here.

  1. John made a valid point! His comment was thoughtful. If you can’t respect people who politely disagree with you, you really don’t belong in this job. I too am a writer for a living, and have done some journalism, and in my opinion your response to John was totally inappropriate.

  2. I don’t think there is anything wrong with pointing out that John is a troll! Hello! Its obvious he likes to stir the pot to get a reaction!

  3. Anonymouse, are you kidding? You want to make this a police state where kids can’t walk home? Give me a break! And you wonder why kids are obese these days. And why parents are exhausted–their children can’t leave their sight without someone making a federal case about it. Crime is lower now than when we (at least thirty- and forty-somethings) were kids! Infuriating. He and his parents are guilty of no crime!

  4. Mike, I fail to see the relevance of you post that ridicules John as a complainer.

I think its highly unprofessional for a contributor/editor to dig through a years worth of posts to lambaste one of your readers.

    Keep up the good work!

  5. Speaking of cracking down on crime before it happens… We can talk about the 6 year old boy I saw walking home in the pouring rain, alone, with no umbrella or gloves. He wasn’t from St. Catherine’s and was walking alone for blocks. That’s really unsafe. Find another parent or family member who can take your child home. Get him into the Big Brother program if you’re desperate. They do serious background checks. This isn’t Leave it to Beaver, it’s 2012.

  6. My complaint was not about the reporting of the crime. It was about the sensational wording. They used to call it “yellow” journalism. Of course crime happens, and of course people want to know about it. But a good reporter REPORTS it. A good reporter keeps emotion and loaded words out of it. I love the ML blog and love it when it covers all news (good and bad), using good journalism standards.

  7. So John, we should just be quiet about it and just accept our statistical fate ? Pssttttt……I have a secret for you. Crime happens in Maple Leaf, probably everyday. Was that too sensational for you ?

  8. I agree it is good to be aware of crime. However, my point is there are burglars in every neighborhood and most neighborhoods have more break-ins than ours and this website should be accurate in their reporting. As a result of this sites misinformation people have made comments on this site that they are going to move to a different neighborhood, however there is as much or more crime in most other neighborhoods and crime is typically worse around Christmas time every year and during a bad economy. It is inaccurate reporting to say crimes that happened in ravenna or pinehurst occurred in our neighborhood. Maybe they should say northgate area instead of maple leaf.

  9. The author is not bad mouthing the neighborhood – she’s correctly pointing out that many area homes/businesses have suffered the same and there appears to be a pattern.

@John – Maple Leaf is part of Northgate and Northgate is part of Maple Leaf – we’re hemmed in by the same major arterials. Worry less about perception and more about reality. NG and Last Drop are a 10 nimute walk to the geographic heart of Maple Leaf and you should care.

  10. Ah, yes, blame the media. That will certainly help stop the break-ins. Ignorance is bliss, right?
Seriously, the worst thing you can do is ignore crime. And if I hadn’t read it here, I wouldn’t have known there’s a prowler in the hood. I’m smarter because of this blog.
Do you think the burglars look at the neighborhood boundary maps? (see below)

The best deterrant is public vigilance: everybody keep any eye (or video camera) out, use alarms or dogs, and/or wrought-iron door grates.

And in regards to the neighborhood boundaries, Maple Leaf Park isn’t in Maple Leaf, according to the city. http://clerk.seattle.gov/~public/nmaps/html/NN-1038S.htm
So maybe let’s not get too picky about this blog’s coverage of the area.

  11. I also agree with Jan. Maple leaf life needs to stop sensationalizing this type of stuff as some of their articles end up on the seattle times website and make our neighborhood look bad and make residents unnecessarily worried. Maple Leaf has only had 3 residential burglaries in the past 3 weeks according to the SPD crime map, yet all Maple Leaf Life talks about is the crime in our neighborhood, when in reality Maple Leaf has a low level of crime compared to other Seattle neighborhoods and we don’t have major crimes occurring like many other neighborhoods do. Remember, this is a major city, not a small rural town. Crime is going to happen in the city, but it is low in Maple Leaf. And Northgate mall is not a part of the maple leaf neighborhood, neither is Last drop bottle shop. I suggest you check the neighborhood boundaries before posting this stuff. Maple leaf life, quit bad mouthing our neighborhood and stop the bad PR.

  12. Jan – when it’s your front door smashed in and your property stolen, I’d like to see you take the same ridiculous posture against “sensational wording.” These crimes are serious and scary for the people getting robbed. Go talk to the clerk at Radio Shack on L.C. Way that had a gun pulled on him this week. I did, and it was a rather “sensational” story.

And someone WILL be next… That’s the whole point.

  13. Please stop sensationalizing this type of stuff. Wording like “join the club” and “who’s next” is really unnecessary.

  14. Mai Ling:

Good Point I forgot about that. Although, many of the break-ins seem to be occurring through doors with large glass panels. At least that is the case for Piccolo and Last Drop Bottle Shop. They should put the cameras inside the doors so by the time the person break-ins, they have already been recorded. If they steal or break the camera it won’t matter since they have already been recorded.

    neighbor:
I am in. We should all meet at Cloud City and starting planning what sort of recon we need to do 🙂

  15. Maple Leaf really needs to set up a sting operation & catch all these jerks! Ok? Who’s with me? Any insomniacs out there that need something to do in the middle of the night?

  16. I hope they catch this person or group of people. I hope the other businesses around here will spend the money to put up camera’s in their entry ways. Basic cameras are relatively cheap now days.

Plus, unless its dumb kids who broke in simply for beer, what else of substantial value is someone going to be able to steal from a beer shop? People must know that most businesses have a secure safe or don’t leave money on the premises so it can’t be cash they are after.
