Woman assaulted Friday night near Northgate Mall

Posted by Mike on February 9th, 2013

Update: Police say the location of the assault was First Avenue Northeast and Northeast 117th Street.

A woman walking home from the Northgate Mall area was dragged into nearby bushes and sexually assaulted about 7 p.m. Friday, police say.

The suspect description:

• White male 20-30 years old

• Very short (buzz-cut), light colored hair

• Medium height and thin build

• The victim described him as looking “methy” with very bad teeth, sunken eyes and a wiry build.

The victim managed to walk home, where her roommate called police. She was treated at Harborview Medical Center, police said. The investigation is open; anyone with information is asked to call 911.

We’ve asked the police for a better location for the assault.

Do we know specifically where this happened?

Yes, “near the Northgate mall” is not very helpful. Can we get a street please?

Called the North Precinct and they have no further address or info. I told my seventeen year old daughter she is staying in tonight. There was also an assult on a 14 year old boy involving robbery and a gun Tuesday just north of Hubbard Park. He was also taken to the hospital. This violent stuff is not good.

That address doesn’t exist but if its kinda right it would be near Northgate Elementary. West side of freeway just barely near the overpass. Just a handful of blocks from me. Hope they catch him soon. Got my kid on alert.

Shame on KIRO for lowering themselves to getting the “story” in place of actually informing the public of a potential danger. The actual assault as you have reported occurred over 1/2 mile north of where KIRO set up their cameras at the mall – complete with footage of the sidewalks in and around the mall rather than at the *actual* scene of the crime. If they were at all concerned about enhancing public safety via accurate information, they would have done some homework ( isn’t that what real journalists are charged with?) and reported from the actual scene right smack @ Northgate Elementary and the Korean Catholic church. I am thoroughly disgusted!

Thank you, Nan. The address still didn’t add up but when you mentioned the church I know where it is now. That’s an area I’ve walked myself many times at night but mostly the fear is traffic coming around that curve.

I don’t think KOMO was intentionally trying to sensationalize the story. The mall is a better backdrop for a news story than some dimly lit little nook near a church. Maybe they’re hinting that she was followed from the mall? Reporters sometimes get more of the story than viewers.

Was followed once from the Safeway at night by some shady character and made eye contact but he kept on. Saw a state trooper had pulled someone over on Lake City Wy and just walked quickly toward the patrol car.

Good time to review safety plans alright, especially with your kids. Sounds like this particular guy favors the 30 something crowd though.
