This appeared today in Maple Leaf Reservoir Park.

It’s part of the city’s and county’s Pianos in the Parks project.

“This is one of 20 artist-designed pianos you will find in select Seattle and King County parks (today) through August 17th.”

Take a photo or video of you or your friends playing and post it to the project’s Facebook site or at #pianosintheparks

For more information and a list of businesses and organizations supporting the project go to its web site.

Our artist is Arica Schuett.

  1. We went by again last night before the rain and found it quite playable although not quite as in tune as before. No sticking keys.

    FWIW.

Hope it’s OK today in the torrential rains. At least there doesn’t seem to be much wind, so hopefully the unsecured tarp and tent are still above it.

  2. I went to check out this piano and the art is very nice. Although, perhaps due to the recent rain, I found it to be unplayable. Many of the mid range keys stick.
Just thought I should mention this.

  3. After seeing this article yesterday, my wife the piano teacher had to go by last night and play it.

What a lovely artistic treatment of a piano! The thing is really beautiful, and she said it plays OK and is in tune with itself, which is very nice.

One thing: someone provided a very nice tarp to cover it at night, but you will want to put a strap or rope or long bungee cord around the bottom of it rather than just draping it. Any wind will take a loose tarp right away, while a modest hold-down going all the way around at the bottom will keep it there except in the worst wind.

Nice job to the artist and the City for doing this!!!!

PS I took some pics in the dark and will send one or two separately.

MLL: Dan sent the night shot we’ve posted, above. It’s excellent. Thanks, Dan.
