Stealing bikes and mail in Maple Leaf

Tammy emails overnight:

We live on Northeast 81st Street and Eighth Avenue Northeast, and tonight witnessed two people trying to steal a nice bicycle.

We interrupted them as they were trying to shove the bicycle into a black car (looked like an old cop car like a Crown Victoria or something) that had a white front panel on the passenger side. It was a male and female team, both Caucasian and blond.

He had a short buzz cut haircut and she had longer blondish hair. The car sped down our street and parked. A few seconds later she rode up on the bike. We didn’t see the actual taking of the bike, only when they were trying to shove it into the trunk and then when that didn’t work shove it into the backseat.

We approached them and asked if they needed help or if they were just trying to steal someone else’s bike. Then we told them we were calling the cops and tried to take a photo of the license plate.

The cops were called, they took a report but we are hoping to help find the owner of the bike since it is obviously from our neighborhood and the cop said our efforts to place the bike will be much more successful than if we gave him the bike to take with him.

If anyone knows someone who is missing a bike from this evening, I wonder if they can email the tips@mapleleaflife.com and then you could put us in touch with them.

And Jennifer reports on Monday in Nextdoor Northgate/Maple Leaf:

I came home from work this morning to find my neighbors’ and my mailboxes all opened and mail scattered on the ground. One of my neighbors had a package that had been ripped open and the item taken out. This was on Northeast 100th Street and Eighth Avenue Northeast.

I know this is an ongoing problem in this neighborhood, just wanted to alert others!

  1. Good question Thomas. We already know they admitted to not investigating home burglaries, rape kits, and car prowls. Why bother them and ruin their break time? When you do call them it seems like they are irritated as crap that you are even calling them. Just pay your taxes and keep going to work.

  2. That black Crown Victoria with a white door parks on Roosevelt between NE 53rd and 54th; I see it most every morning on my commute. I’ll get the license plate the next time I see it.

  3. Theres drug dealers in our Maple Leaf neighborhood and they arent what you expect. They look mostly like anyone else. Retired mothers with sons living in the basement etc. They are bring ing a lot of this in and the police dont care.

  4. I don’t know who is homeless of the folks I see more of. But we do have lots of regulars who are part of our neighborhoods whether we like it or not. I’ll call some of them rag tags – One with the round hat looks like he’s crawled out from under a log. Another looks like any guy USA with his paper grocery bag except for it’s not clear where he is going. Another one looks worn and ragged with his bottles of whatever and his backpack. I’ve seen a definite increase in these kind of folks in the past 2 years of the 11.5 years I’ve resided in Northgate. Some have been spotted hunkered in the laundry stairwells and alcoves within the Northgate apartments. Some have visited a corner of the property I live in and left their garbage. The 4 I’ve seen the past 2 days on my travels late morning noonish are young white males who walk a bit, then stop, change directions, walk stop, run – what the hell are they doing I wonder? Peer here, creep over there. Location? Between 9th NE and 3rd NE near Northgate Way. Greenlake Jewelry/Starbucks lot, back and forth 5th and N. Gate Way. If they are doing something illegal, I’d think they might be discreet. They are a bit unsettling because unlike most everyone else – it’s not clear what they are doing. Any ideas? Would drug dealers be that obvious? I hear they are downtown but??

  5. Ive lived her for 6 months, 94th + Roosevelt, and just had my first stolen package. The thief is going to be really excited to have their choice of 6 white bra-size-specific swimsuit tops. Ugh!

  6. North Precinct article is interesting. Says property crime is down 14% Wondering about definitions. Is mail theft property crime for example. And what is “violent crime” Does it mean personal assault?
Also wondering about the perceived increase in homeless folks. Could it just be that since the weather is nice they are more visible? When its cold and nasty I would think they would hunker down indoors more and some shelters are only open during winter months.
Horrified someone would shoot up right outside Target. Hope security was notified. Needles are a huge problem no doubt.

  7. Like everyone else, I’ve noticed an increasing number of homeless kids or young adults in the neighborhood. With the increase, I’m seeing more hypodermic needles strewn on the ground. Since these homeless drug users can’t stay in homeless shelters or the Nickelsville tent encampments because of their drug use, they’ve found comfort among themselves in North Seattle.

Today, as I was entering the Northgate Target store, there was a young woman sitting on a bench next to the elevators who was shooting up and she dropped her hypodermic needle on the ground. I was very surprised that she doing this in a public location. At first I thought she might be a diabetic, but she was disheveled, talking incoherently to herself, and her body was twitching.

Drug users need their fix and drugs cost money. Since property crime is such a low priority for law enforcement, burglarizing a house or car prowling is like hitting a jackpot on a slot machine and no one ever walks away from a slot machine that keeps paying out. It’s a better and bigger payout than standing on the side of the road begging money from motorists.

That young lady who was shooting up outside of the Target store will soon need another fix. No doubt, she’ll be playing the slot machines again (residential burglary, car prowling).

  8. I’m sure a lot of it is the economy, there are a lot more poor living on the streets, in campers and in cars scraping to get by, which always means these types of crime. Poverty rates and crime rates are always linked.

  9. Ugh! This is annoying!! I just read an article that Northgate crime has risen by 50% within the last few months because city of Seattle has shifted its safety resources to downtown Seattle. Does anyone know what the North community is doing to prevent the increase of crime in this area??

  10. I’ve now had my second package stolen from my porch in 4 months and have found piles of neighbor’s mail on the ground twice. Mail theft seems pretty prevalent right now. I’m buying a locking mailbox. I think most of it is happening late at night, both the packages I had stolen were delivered on Saturdays where I was out of town until Sunday… not going to let that happen again.

  11. I think that same guy drives a beat up old late 80s early 90s Ford van with a camper type vent on top (usually has one of those foil windshield screens on teh dash when parked). He had a lot of tattoos on his arms and upper body as well? I may have his license plate for the van if its the same guy which I believe it is. He parks the van and shuttles people at all hours of the night into the van to do god knows what for minutes to an hour. One night he brought at least a dozen people to the van. Was coming and going from the same silver 4dr beater with different kinds of goods. Called the police and the 911 operator was a real (insert expletive).

We have found the police dont give a crap and the best way to handle it is with confrontation to those invading our neighborhood. My neighbor pit one with a piece of firewood across the face and ran him off. Theres always ore though.
