NW Maple Leaf condo owners meeting on future

Terry (a regular correspondent) writes with news of a forum this Tuesday for condo owners and renters in the Northgate area.
“The changes going on in the northwest quadrant of Maple Leaf, especially Sound Transit, will overwhelmingly transform the character of the neighborhood; and is, even now. ”
A “condo summir” is scheduled for Sept. 22nd at Olympic View Community Church, 425 N.E. 95th St. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The organizer, Bob Junell, has invited all condo owners and renters from the six condos around First Avenue Northeast and Northeast 95th Street.
“New hotel progressing, new parking lot at Northgate, and now a huge project proposed for bike/pedestrian bridge,” writes Junell, who also has concerns about crime and traffic.
He has invited representatives from the neighborhood council, several city departments, neighborhood businesses and others.
“Join us to learn more and discuss the impacts – positive and negative! ”

  1. I don’t know how it wouldn’t be crucial. If ST and SDOT are only putting up a combined $10 million, and the bridge costs over $20 million…

    wish you’d been at the forum last night. Al of SDOT mentioned the pledges; been from what I gathered, neither was a done deal.

    As for the TIGER grant, unless I misunderstood him, that’s still a possibility, however remote.

    Additionally, I don’t recall that he said anything about the Move Seattle levy as being crucial to the final construction of the carbon fiber tube which would be the new bridge over the freeway; but admittedly, I was more busy trying to judge the light and how to get it to work for some photos I was shooting.

  3. Ed, as Will Rogers once said, “All I know is what I read in the papers.” To which, I’d amend that to include “news sites.”

    I’d not read the entire text of the Move Seattle levy and, nothing that I recall from last night’s presentation, indicated that levy would ensure further funding of the additional pedestrian-bicyclist bridge; without reading through it all, will take your word for it.

    I do know that full funding was presented as requiring TIGER monies. The reason being that the final figure is still to-be-determined.

    Finally, I have referred to the proposed bridge as being an addition, as there is an overpass at NE 92nd Street that allows pedestrians and bicyclists to get over the I5 freeway and up to Northgate. Indeed, when I once explained to a longtime acquaintance that a proposed new bridge was to built to access a new transit center, more readily, he replied, “There’s one (a bridge) already. You just have to go down to it and then back up. How lazy are people?”

    I guess we’ll find out, soon enough.

  4. The Move Seattle levy has absolutely nothing to do with further funding for the additional proposed (bicycle-pedestrian) bridge; which would theoretically make it easier for students (and others) to get from North Seattle College, over to the Northgate area.

    At the meeting, last night, Al (didn’t get correct spelling of last name), a representative for SDOT (Seattle Department of Transportation), explained that SDOT and Sound Transit have each pledged $5 million to fund the proposed bridge; however, design estimates for the technologically advanced carbon fiber bridge have suggested that more monies might be required.

    Al said that funding would perhaps come from a federal government program called TIGER (Transportation Investment for Generating Economic Recovery), which still exists; as the result of the near economic collapse of the American economy in late 2008.

  5. It did, and ST was going to pull funding but SDOT convinced them to hold out a little while longer.
    WSDOT is going to contribute $10 million, and the Move Seattle levy, if passed, would add some more (not sure on the exact amount).

  6. I can’t help but think the rail will be a net positive for those so close to the terminus. I figure it will add $30k to the value of our place, if not more.

    I thought the bridge failed to secure funding? I think it would be a net positive, as well, but have not taken any position on it.
