Veterans Day is Wednesday, Nov. 11, which is a federal holiday. That means schools, banks and post offices will be closed, along with all branches of the Seattle Public Library and many Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities.

Parks facilities that will be closed:

  • Community centers
  • Teen life centers
  • Environmental learning centers
  • Indoor swimming pools
  • Green Lake Small Craft Center
  • Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center

All boat ramps will remain open, along with the Amy Yee Tennis Center and golf courses at Interbay, Jackson Park, Jefferson Park and West Seattle.

Woodland Park Zoo is offering free admission to all active, retired, and veteran U.S. military personnel and their spouses with valid service identification on Veterans Day. Also, up to four accompanying family members with valid ID will receive $5 off regular zoo admission on Veterans Day. The zoo’s winter hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  1. The idea of having the Seattle Parks Department swimming pools open on Veterans Day makes sense, not only for the children who are out of school, but also for veterans. The latter could be a similar dynamic to having the Woodland Park Zoo open and offering free admission for veterans and their spouses.

Yes, it’s a legal holiday and it’s called Veterans Day.

That phrase, “Thank you for your service,” can ring hollow, or it can be a prime example of putting one’s money where one’s mouth is.

  2. They are legal holidays. How are you sure there are part time staffers that would be happy have the hours? As someone that has a bunch of employees and manages a place that’s open holidays, let me tell you how hard it is to staff holidays. Tomorrow I’m getting stuck doing it all myself.

  3. I don’t understand why Seattle Parks Department swimming pools are closed on Veterans Day (and the day after Thanksgiving for that matter) when all the kids are out of school and could use some activities and exercise. Isn’t that why we pass levies for the Parks Department? When I’ve inquired as to why these facilities are closed I’ve been told “we need days off too”. I’m sure there are part time staffers that would be happy to have the hours. The Parks Department exists for and because of the residents (i.e. taxpayers) of Seattle!
