A White Christmas here? (Also, trouble in the passes)

Monday update: The snow has officially made its way into the icons:

More good news: After the (possible) snow: Christmas Day should be partly sunny, 41 38 degrees.

—————————————————————–

Fact: Maple Leaf is the third-highest hill in Seattle – 466 feet outside the Blue Saucer on Roosevelt Way Northeast.

Fact: The current National Weather Service forecast discussion for Seattle notes:

THE AIR MASS WILL GET COLDER WITH EACH SYSTEM PUTTING SNOW LEVELS DOWN TO 500 FEET BY THURSDAY EVENING…. THIS COULD DROP SNOW LEVELS TO SEA-LEVEL WITH SNOW SHOWERS OR FLURRIES THURSDAY NIGHT INTO CHRISTMAS MORNING. THIS IS STILL FAR OUT IN THE FORECAST PERIOD BUT MODELS HAVE SHOWN THIS WITH JUST ABOUT EVERY RUN. ANY SNOW THAT DOES FALL WILL LIKELY BE LIGHT.

By the way, the forecast discussion also notes that due to heavy snow, travel through the Cascade passes will be “difficult or impossible” at times Tuesday and Wednesday.

  1. I didn’t think our hill actually had a name? I call it San Juan Hill…because Roosevelt charges up both sides of it.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

  2. For years it was reported that we are the second highest point in Seattle, behind some location in west Seattle. Now we’re the third highest. Which is correct?

  3. Some snow – maybe just an inch or two – would be a good thing, if only to give folks with Subaru vehicles, a chance to see just how good the all-wheel-drive systems beneath them are.

While it was a mess, my memory of December, 2008 – major snowfall and a real cluster (expletive deleted) – was of two weeks of mostly quiet time. I read a couple of books and slept better than I had in years.

On Christmas day, two good friends came over and got me for dinner. As I recall, they came in an all-wheel drive vehicle… a Subaru.

I am not making that up.
