“Something has to be done.”

That’s the comment from one reader on the news that a man suspected of multiple burglaries in the area had been charged – but not caught.

Another reader, Vince, wrote:

Our car, which was stolen on the night of Dec 6, was found on Dec 15 in Fremont, just off Aurora Ave. The car had been driven off-road and has minor damage – taillight lens, trim piece, scratch, etc. – but of course minor damage to a car is still major $ to repair. It was filthy inside and out and the car stereo and amplifier were stolen. It was driven until empty.

And on our last roundup of car thefts or prowls, Mike wrote “is there anything else I can do?”

Yes, there is. We gave some tips here last month, but more importantly, come to the Maple Leaf Community Council’s annual general meeting next month, which includes an agenda item on public safety along with a “town hall” meeting for the neighborhood.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Olympic View Elementary, 504 N.E. 95th St. Here’s the report from the January 2010 meeting – which discussed how much crime Maple Leaf has, and what to do about it. Detective Mike Magan and crime prevention officers spoke at the event, which occurred shortly after two armed robberies in Maple Leaf.

Meanwhile, here’s a December 2010 update. The good news – no more burglaries since the suspect mentioned above was charged.

The bad news:

  • Two cars were stolen a day ago, on Sunday morning, Dec. 19. One theft occurred in the 8200 block of 17th Avenue Northeast, the other in the  8600 block of 15th Avenue Northeast.
  • A car was prowled on Thursday evening, Dec. 16, in the 300 block of Northeast Northgate Way.
  • Another was broken into on Wednesday morning, Dec. 15, in the 800 block of Northeast 78th Street.
  • A truck was stolen the afternoon of Tuesday, Dec. 14, from the 8200 block of Lake City Way Northeast.
  • The window of a car inside a locked parking garage was smashed and a GPS unit stolen on Monday, Dec. 13, in the  500 block of Northeast Northgate Way. A second vehicle was prowled that evening in the 10700 block of 19th Avenue Northeast.
