Crime report – on the seventh day of the New Year

It would be nice if we had fewer crimes to report.

But it IS nice that one victim left us a comment on his own experience.

I’m the dummy who was warming up my unlocked car on 12th. I’ve lived in the neighborhood for 20 years, and, while I’ve heard of break ins and stolen or broken into vehicles, it never happened to me. I have learned my lesson big time, and have stepped up security procedures for my house and yard. This a particularly attractive area for car theft because of the quick freeway access.

His car was stolen on Jan. 3. Since then, the neighborhood has been active, according to police reports.

  • Home burglaries were reported on Jan. 4, in the 8200 block of Eighth Avenue Northeast, and on Jan. 5, in the 10500 block of 19th Avenue Northeast.
  • Cars were reported broken into in the 300 block of Northeast Northgate Way on Jan. 4 and Jan. 5, and in the 500 block on Jan. 4.
  • A car was reported stolen on Jan. 6 in the 600 block of Northeast Banner Place.

Remember that the 7 p.m. general meeting on Jan. 26 of the Maple Leaf Community Council includes a report and discussion of neighborhood crime.

  1. No one deserves to have their car stolen. The suggestion is ludicrous, disrespectful…and it IS mean. Do I deserve to have my house robbed simply because it looks like it might contain nice things? Is the woman who was recently attacked to blame because she dared to walk out of her house in the dark, thus egging on her attackers with her audacious behavior? Did my neighbor who had her LOCKED car running to warm it deserve to have the lock punched, her car nearly stolen? This mentality is akin to blaming the rape victim for the assault because she dared to dress in a revealing fashion. No one deserves to be a victim of crime. Criminals are to blame.

How sad that certain individuals feel impelled to sling verbal assaults at their neighbors rather than assist them with respectful commentary and/or suggestions. After all, shouldn’t we be working FOR one another, not against? I dearly appreciate this site (and the wonderful individuals who host it!) precisely because the intent is to inform, support and bind-together a community.

Unfortunately, in the era of anonymous or semi-anonymous responses penned with the ‘bravery of being out of range’ we are subjected to negative, blame-the-victim responses that have no aim but to spew vitriol under the guise of free speech. Perhaps whatthepho would be equally eager and comfortable to look her/his neighbor in the eye and say the things that he/she writes. It would also be pitiful and sad. It wouldn’t be a surprise, just sad.

Still…this individual IS correct. He/she CAN write this junk to heart’s content. In fact, we ALL have the right to reveal our ignorance, rudeness, and lack of citizenry as often as we like.

My suggestions is thus: to those individuals who would rather use this site to spew junk…start your own website, advertise it as the Official Anti-Community Maple Leaf website and invite other, like-minded individuals (based upon comments seen here and elsewhere, I’m sure you’ll have little difficulty finding eager participants) to use it instead as your ugly, little forum. Good luck.

And, to answer the question embedded in your moniker, whatthepo: no one cares.

  2. WTP is correct. It’s not mean, its true. Maple Leaf is a generally well to do neighborhood with quck escape access, and thieves realize it. Having your car snatched stings. I’m pi$$ed off and having a hard time getting oevr it.

  3. There was a home invasion early this morning (the vincinity of 95th and Lake City). Check Times and/or PI for additional detail.
