A burglar inside her home: A woman's afternoon scare is a classic example of how crooks work

When you read police tips on crime prevention, you’ll  find advice like this: “The standard method of casing a house is to knock on the door to see if anyone is home.

“If it is a burglar and he gets no answer, he usually goes around the side or back to break in.”

At 1:30 in the afternoon on Friday, Jan. 7, a woman living in the 10500 block of 9th Avenue Northeast heard someone knocking loudly at her front door, according to a report from the officer who responded to her “burglary in progress” call.

The crime prevention tips say: “If you are home it is a good idea to answer the door. Remember, you don’t have to open the door to answer it; you can speak through the door.”

In this case, the woman said she did that, saying “who’s there” at the front door. No answer, so she returned to her bedroom.

But the next thing she heard was “someone knocking loudly at the back door and then a loud bang when the door was kicked in,” according to the officer’s report.

The woman “ran into the kitchen and yelled something and the suspect ran” – through her backyard toward Roosevelt Avenue Northeast.

According to the crime prevention tips: “If you notice this behavior do not hesitate to call 911. Yes, you could be mistaken, but it is better to call and have police check it out.” She did.

The incident occurred on the same day a woman was tied up in a home invasion robbery in Maple Leaf.

Since our last crime report, police report burglars also hit homes:

  • In the 800 block of Northeast 106th Street on Jan 11.
  • In the 800 block of Brooklyn Avenue Northeast on Jan. 10.
  • In the 1500 block of Northeast 75th Street sometime over the holidays. Additional details – a car, mountain bike and house keys were stolen from a locked garage there.

We’ll save a roundup of stolen and busted-into cars for our next report.
