Masked marauders burgle Maple Leaf Dog Oasis

This morning there was something missing from the Maple Leaf Dog Oasis.

And a plaintive note on the D.O. white board from a dog who didn’t get his anticipated biscuit treat.

This is not the first time the treat jar has disappeared from the Dog Oasis. We suspect bands of marauding raccoons.

That’s why the treat jar is locked to the fence with a retractable bicycle lock, installed after several jars were found dismembered up and down the block. (The Dog Oasis is at 12th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 89th Street.)

In fact, several hours later the current jar was found, lid off and handle broken, in a neighbor’s backyard.

Raccoons can be incredibly strong, and often travel in packs. There’s a theory that they have a circuit here in northeast Seattle, swinging through our neighborhood about every 5-6 weeks.

In fact, we’ve heard one other report of smashed yard fixtures from overnight, this one on Northeast 94th Street just east of 15th Avenue Northeast.

Anybody else spot marauders  recently?

  1. Joe,

A pellet gun is not likely to kill a raccoon outright, only infuriate it, and you don’t want to be around a pissed-off raccoon.

Furthermore Seattle Municipal Code 12A.14.071 states, “A person is guilty of discharge of a firearm if he or she wilfully discharges a firearm in a place where there is a reasonable likelihood that humans, domestic animals or property will be jeopardized”. Your neighbors may well have an opinion about this and might call the police, quite justifiably in my opinion.

You should contact the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife to find out what your legal and safe options are.

  2. Four of the last five nights a raccoon has raised havoc in my tiny pond. plants tipped over, pump tripped, all for four small fish that have been raised since babies. I have a net over & that doesn’t seem to be working. I am ready for the end of these aggressive, destructive pests!!

  3. I’m pretty sure there’s a raccoon regularly in a tree on my property at 97th and Roosevelt; there’s scat at the base and the bark looks distressed like a crawled creature goes up and down it.

Is it possible to get rid of them without hiring an exterminator? Since I can’t discharge a firearm in city limits, would a pellet gun do the trick? These things are a menace without a natural predator; I’d be happy to thin their herd if I can do it legally.

  4. We had one give birth in the roof of our detached garage last year. I found out by hearing some scratching and then walked over near the corner and was hissed at pretty bad. Mom moved all the kids out shortly after and we sealed up all openings. We still get one that we see about every other month or so in our back yard at night. We have nicknamed him/her Rocky.

I always double check before letting the dog out in the back yard at night because they can do some serious damage to a dog.

  5. They’ve been in & around our backyard a lot (88th & 17th). In fact this morning I heard a dog barking like crazy a block away…. drove by to see if I could see what was up… a raccoon on the fence (moving slowly & slothily) and the dog was going nuts. Guess they aren’t the nocturnal creatures I thought they were. Thus I don’t leave my dog in my backyard during the day. He’d probably try to “get” one & that would be bad news for all…

  6. I think they were here night before last. Left poop on the top of my outside chairs and moved stuff around on the table. We’ve had them around here for a while. 12th and 94th

  7. I’m pretty sure raccoons knocked over the little water bowl I keep in my front yard last night – and I’m right down the block from the dog oasis.
