A memorial is growing at the shooting site, 15th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 75th Street.

Sept. 4: The Seattle Times has an update here.

Police now say Yancy Noll, killed in a shooting Friday evening, was likely the victim of road rage.

They are looking for a silver BMW Z4 convertible, with recent body damage and a broken passenger-side window.

In a release, police said:

Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect pulled up next to the victim in his car and for reasons that may be related to a road-rage type of incident, fired multiple rounds at the victim, striking him several times. The suspect then fled the scene in his car and remains at large.

The type of car, and a sketchy surveillance video, can be seen in another release here.

KOMO-TV says Knoll was a well-known and liked wine manager for the QFC grocery chain, and lived just blocks from the shooting scene. That story is here.

The shooting occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 31st at 15th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 75th Street. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the Seattle Police Homicide Tip Line at (206) 233-5000. Anonymous tips are welcome.

  1. Perhaps some lane dividers and signage on 75th would provide some clarity as to how many lanes it is. I’ve been involved on dozens of “misunderstandings” with people on that road. There was even a writeup in the times a few years ago explaining the logic behind a super wide road with no clear delineation.

  2. More and more drivers (and cyclists) are using these inexpensive video cams that have SD cards and re-record a couple of hours of video. One bicycle rider in the Bay Area had one that enabled police there to identify the scumbag that ran him over from behind and then raced away. The cam got a nice clear picture of his license plate.
This is just one example: http://www.zetronix.com/Car-Cameras/c59/Wide-Angle-Car/Truck-Dash-DVR-Cam(140)/product_info.html?osCsid=tmvpokrovgmfvee1dlhpestos0

  3. How many silver BMW Z4 are there in this state? I imagine each owner is being contacted, and asked where they were when this occurred, starting with those registered nearest the event, and working outward. I predict an arrest will occur soon.

  4. I agree with Dan M. Having lived in the area for more than 20 years I have come to understand that people who pass through this area come in all shapes and sizes, and all manners of disposition and mental conditions.

I don’t find fault with investigators or not being able to round up the usual suspects in a reasonable time, but you better believe that rounding up the suspects is exactly what they are doing at this very moment. My expectation is that there will be a suspect arrested within 7-10 days, maybe sooner.

The police know what happened, but since an arrest hasn’t been made they don’t want to tip their hat to what actually happened, so as to tip off the murderer. I have confidence that the police will find this criminal and bring him to justice soon.

  5. To Clueless Citizen:

Wouldn’t it be more likely that “may be related to road rage” would be connected to a BMW “with recent body damage”, indicating that the person in the BMW was raging against Yancy for being involved with the recent body damage?

That corner of 75th and 15th is often the scene of fender benders; look at that brick fence on the SE corner and how often it is damaged.

My bet is on a hotheaded moron who can afford both a silver BMW Z4 convertible and a handgun, and not being able to control his use of one when the other is damaged.

How many cars like that can there be in this area?

  6. “may be related to a road-rage” Is this code for: “the cops have no idea and if this was totally random and could happen tomorrow, people might be freaked out ” ? Seriously, for the people who actually knew Yancy, can you see Yancy cutting somebody off and then giving them the middle finger salute ? Hey, no worries though. School starts tomorrow and as long as you don’t engage in “road rage” you will be fine.
