The Green Skunk moves to Maple Leaf

The Green Skunk, a marijuana dispensary formerly located in Pinehurst at 11231 Roosevelt Way N.E., has moved south into the space vacated by Maple Leaf Massage (now joined by Thrive Physical Therapy) at 9414 Roosevelt Way N.E.

We’ve received a few emails from neighbors wondering if its location just blocks from Olympic View Elementary and The Perkins School violates any laws. Indeed, according to the pot shops map we linked to last month, the Maple Leaf stretch of Roosevelt is not included in the proposed areas where dispensaries will be allowed.

However, under the new proposal to judge distance by “common path” rather than as the crow flies, which is how the rule is enforced federally, The Green Skunk appears to be legit. They might get hassled by the federal government because they’re a few feet shy of 1,000 feet from Olympic View as the crow flies, but perhaps that’s a risk they’re willing to take. (Or maybe they have a more accurate way of calculating distance than Google Maps!)

While we’re on the subject of marijuana dispensaries, we should point out that Delta 9 and MMJ Coop on Lake City Way both have relocated. According to its website, Delta 9 now is located in Sodo at 1950 First Ave. S., while a sign on MMJ says the co-op has moved a half-mile north to 10728 Lake City Way N.E.

Meanwhile, Lake City Conscious Care Cooperative has moved in across the street from MMJ at 8288 Lake City Way N.E.

  1. Rick — Can you tell me whether you’ve called this in to 9-1-1 so we can follow up with SPD?

If you didn’t call it in, why not?

    Thanks,
    David Miller

  2. The recent lane changes to Roosevelt make it look like SDOT engineers have been toking. The centerline weaves all over the place.

  3. I don’t smoke pot, but I think it is a mistake to greenline the city in a way that turns certain neighborhoods into pot zones. It seems to me that it would be safer, and have a less negative impact on individual neighborhoods, if people could just buy it at a local store like they do alcohol.

  4. Dan and the others should start paying attention to the folks on 5th and on Roosevelt and immediate side streets. It only takes them a few minutes. Start paying attention to your neighborhood and you’ll see it. Why else would anyone pull up and meet some guy pulling stuff out of his crotch and exchanging it for money. It ain’t pot theyre digging out their butt.

  5. I have lived in this house my whole life. The space where the Green Skunk is located, used to be Pearson`s Grocery. It was operated by a one armed vet from WW2. I`ll bet old man Pearson is rolling in his grave to see what became of the place. It would be nice if the storefront was impenetrable to intruders, at least.

  6. Dude – Mr. Observer – want a dope idea. I read your post on my phone while I was sipping on my helmet mounted latte and was cruising up the Roosevelt Bike lanes dropping a middle finger to all those earth killing, right wing oil supporters driving those metal buckets that run on fossil fuel. I sure showed them. I then got a bad look from the 7-11 worker when I click clacked through his store with my bike shoes on to get me a 5 hour energy so I could finish the ride to the Green Skunk. I also thought, hey man, that 7-11 worker should union up and go on strike because he should be making at least $20/hour to have a livable wage in these parts. Not to mention so he could have a little extra to buy some Mary from me at Skunk.

Anyway, sweet post bro and do you have any good resources for a safe? Preferably one with a key because for some odd reason my mind is a little cloudy now days and I can’t seem to remember stuff so I will probably forget the combo if its one of those fancy safes with that round dial turny thing that clicks. Dude, but then where would I hide the key? Any thoughts on that?

  7. The MMJ places will be put out of business by the State issuing licenses to others for growing and retail sale to the general public.

The Feds will crack down on Colorado and Washington at some point, putting the legal grow and sales places out of business.

Back to the old black market after that, with the problems associated with it.

The above scenario is most likely if the next Presidential election goes red.

I think the regulated production, distribution, sales and taxation of marijuana is the least harm approach.

How come the owners of these places don’t have very secure storage in their shops? A heavy safe seems appropriate.

  8. There may be a required buffer for medical shops like this one, but the 1000-foot buffer mentioned above is for yet-to-be-opened retail shops. As for how it is measured the DoJ wants the flying crow definition. The Green Skunk could be hoping that in the event of further federal relaxation, medical shops could somehow convert to retail shops AND the Liquor Board could get its favored common path definition. Again, it’s likely a non-issue.

  9. I have a writing challenge for the posters here. Can someone put together a post that cleverly ties in the recent lane modifications on Roosevelt with the 7-11 and the Green Skunk ? It is the end of the week and I know there are creative authors out there who can deliver a good laugh. I know the world is fraught with danger but a good laugh goes a long way.

  10. From what I gather looking at their Facebook page, the Skunk opened on September 21st-ish and was robbed (after hours) within its first two weeks at the new location. There’s security camera footage showing the photo of the purported robber.

  11. I could be wrong, but I don’t think Courtney was criticizing the 7-11. I think she was making a comparison to why people would be concerned of a pot dispensary when it really isn’t any different than a 7-11 selling beer.

The rest of her comment goes on to say she doesn’t have a problem with it. Again, I could be wrong, but that is my take on her comment.

In regards to the dispensary, I really don’t care about. I think the biggest concern will be the clientele driving to and from the dispensary. I think people who live in the neighborhood tend to be more cautious when driving the streets because they know what its like to be a pedestrian. The outsiders that will be coming because of the dispensaries and our neighborhoods close proximity to I-5 most likely won’t drive around with the same demeanor. Add to the fact that they may or may not be slightly high already, it could increase the traffic danger. You know some people going out for the night will quickly swing through the dispensary and grab some Mary Jane, so that after searching for parking for an hour downtown they can hit the MJ before going into the bar, club, etc….

But its really no different than people leaving a local bar after a few too many, so its just a matter of people needing to be more alert and aware.

  12. Defending pot dispensaries in Maple Leaf and saying that a 7-11 selling alcohol is worse? Well, for one thing, the small stores and big stores are VERY careful I.D.’ing peeps for purchase of alcohol. If you look any younger than 30, you get carded.

I would rather see the Federal Govt. change the Schedule One Status of MJ. as it certainly isn’t in the same class as heroin. It would be better to have legal and regulated and safe dispensing…like pharmacies..which have to meet quite a few rules and regs…not these home grown businesses cropping up in our neighborhoods.

Watch for an increase in crime..as several of these pot dispensaries have been broken into, robbed. Not everyone is a medical pot smoker. And for that matter, crime has increased in Lake City as well as shop lifting.

And folks, tell me…how many pot dispensaries have opened in Laurelhurst…or Medina…or Blue Ridge ? Just curious, ya’ know.

  13. Still doesn’t address how close they are to Olympic View or Perkins. I think they had too much of their Purple Kush when they measured or they got confused with Sacajawea. My brother ran a dispensary in Montana & I guarantee u it wasn’t remotely close to a school. Maybe I will go down there with my case of hemorrhoids & get a Rx that was pre-signed from a MD from Florida & chillax.

  14. I’ve definitely witnessed pre-Green Skunk sketchiness (assumed drug deals) along and just-off Roosevelt between the 7-11 and about 96th. And that makes sense to me living where we do, almost to the point of comfort. Almost.

But re The Green Skunk: as soon as our new laws go into full effect, it will likely be a non-issue. Presumably their move to that location was optimistically strategic w/re to everything from common path distances to cultural evolution. I’ll be surprised if they survive the shock that will hit most medical establishments when laws are fully implemented next year.

W/re cultural evolution: I’m also sure that, despite growing pains, we’ll all soon come to see alcohol as being a much greater evil, putting the 7-11 argument into better perspective.

Kind of like bike lane myopia, eh?

  15. Regular drug deals have seemingly been taking place on the N slope along Roosevelt Way just in front of my house, but they are quick and hard to call anything in on. Cars pull up in the 104th – 100th area generally where the houses are up high on the rockeries and out of site. People and cars pull up, they talk, and they zoom off. I’ve seen this enough that I’m guessing it’s quite common. If you see this happening, please report it to the police. If I make a presence, both parties immediately move on. I’m hoping to at least make them uncomfortable enough to stop using it as a ‘drop point’.

On the note of “drug deals on our sidewalks”, that seems to imply people are openly exchanging drugs in the core of Maple Leaf at the top of the hill…I find this very difficult to believe. Very.

  16. I’ve been watching this location too and havent seen these so-called crowds loitering outside the Green Skunk. Even if there were crowds loitering, do you really think this dispensary would sell to people who are going to stand literally outside their door and re-sell the marijuana to kids? Please…get real.

  17. I have walked our streets many a time….late, early, & inb/w. I have never saw a drug deal or close to it on our sidewalks. I am not ignorant of what that would look like also. They 7-11 worries me about as much as killer bees from Africa. What worries me is the crowd I have seen hanging outside of the Green Skunk which was never there before & does look like a drug deal waiting to happen. No problem with dispensaries but this current location is far from ideal & no where near 1000 feet from Olympic View. More like 600 feet. Just imagine 3 football fields & this only 2 of them.

  18. Where are people selling drugs on our sidewalks? I’m not seeing that at all. And why should we have a problem with a 7-11 selling beer? I often grab a six pack to go there after shopping at Ace Hardware on the weekends. You people are silly. No need to make a bunch of ridiculous accusations to defend the pot dispensaries.

  19. I agree with Rick. Also, does anyone have a problem with the 7-11 on Roosevelt which sells alcohol? A kid would have a much easier time getting his hands on that. Let’s educate our kids, we can’t just insulate them. (Context: I live within a couple blocks of this, have a daughter, don’t drink or smoke, and still have no problem with it.)

  20. Pay attention to what’s going on in Mapleleaf. There are lots of people selling drugs on our sidewalks that are much worse than pot and no one mentions much of anything about it. It’s a much bigger threat than a state legal business.
