Maple Leaf surely has its fair share of backyard chicken coops and other small animals that fit the “urban farm” lifestyle, but you might have to venture outside of the neighborhood to get a glimpse at some of the city’s finest at Seattle Tilth’s City Chicken Coop Tour this weekend.

Seattle Tilth offers a “sneak peek” of Saturday’s City Chicken Coop Tour.

Although no Maple Leaf residences appear to be on the map of 29 Seattle homes that boast bountiful urban farms, there are plenty in the Northeast Seattle area.

Need a little background before you embark on your self-guided tour? Seattle Tilth also offers plenty of resources, including the Seattle Municipal Code for keeping chickens, which now allows for three chickens on a lot that’s at least at least 5,000 square, though eight hens per yard may soon be permitted; frequently asked questions about city chickens; information on composting chicken manure; and more.

Our news partner The Seattle Times also published an article in Pacific NW about the chicken coop trend over the weekend, and you can learn more about the rooster debate from seattlepi.com.

Online registration has ended for the City Chicken Coop Tour, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. But you still can buy tickets, which come with a map of the participating properties, at a handful of locations, the nearest being City Peoples Mercantile, 5440 Sand Point Way N.E.

Each ticket is good for a family or a up to four individuals. Cost is $25 for Seattle Tilth members and $30 for nonmembers.
