Maple Leaf events this weekend are all about saving a buck. Tonight is the monthly Friday Family Fun Night from 6:30-8:30 at Northgate Community Center, 1050 Fifth Ave. N.E., which costs just $5 for an entire family to gather ’round and make a kite.

Or you can head over to Phinney-Greenwood for the pairing of the monthly Art Up Art Walk and the annual Seattle Summer Streets program from 6-9 tonight. The street celebration features Bubbleman (Garry Golightly), a sometimes Maple Leaf resident. To add to the festivities, the Green Bean Coffeehouse, which was burned down in October by an arsonist, is holding a “Grand Re-opening and Silent Art Auction” from 6-8:30 tonight, with proceeds going toward the rebuilding effort. The cafe is located at 8533 Greenwood Ave. N. Read more about the event(s) from our news partner PhinneyWood.

The savings continue tomorrow, when Maple Leaf’s annual neighborhood garage sale kicks off at 9 a.m. A Craigslist post advises interested shoppers to look for signs on Roosevelt Way Northeast, and on Fifth and 15th avenues northeast. Organizer Susan Heller, with John L. Scott Realtors, tells us participating households are at 1034 N.E. 91st St., 1036 N.E. 91st St., 1022 N.E. 91st St. and 1051 N.E. 91st St. The home at 523 N.E. 89th St. has some of its sale items listed on a separate Craigslist ad. Read more about the annual event in our earlier post.

And starting today and continuing through Sunday, La Bera, the new coffee shop at 1000 N.E. Northgate Way that has opened in the location left vacant by The Seattle Crab Co., is holding its grand opening, with giveaways, live music and more.

Other events around the area:

  • Show your support for aspiring actors ages 10-14 by attending Seattle Public Theater Youth Ensemble’s production of “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” the Shakespearean comedy – set in a ‘60s frat house!

The King of Navarre and his three noblemen denounce all worldly pleasures, including women, to increase their intellect, but how long can the men maintain their vow of nerdy academia when the Princess of France and her three beautiful ladies arrive at court? Love’s Labor’s Lost is a feast of language, rich with rhymed verse, wordplay and witty banter, not to mention some truly ridiculous clowns. Audiences will love this fantastic battle of the sexes!

Performances of the play, directed by Shawn Belyea, are at 7 p.m. today and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are free with a suggested donation to the education program.
  • Meanwhile, Seattle Music Theatre is holding the gala fundraiser “Broadway in Concert,” featuring songs from past, current and future shows at the Magnuson Park Theatre, 7250 62nd Ave. N.E. There will be performances at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday by actors who all have been involved with Seattle Music Theatre and are donating their time, energy and talents for this event. Tickets are $20 per person, but children younger than 12 are invited to attend the 3 p.m. performance for free (up to two kids per paying adult). For reservations or information, call 206-363-2809 or visit seattlemusicaltheatre.org.
  • Fans of the “Twilight Saga” books and movies are invited to experience some of the magic of the world created by author Stephenie Meyer through the Twilight at Carkeek Park forest and beach adventure from 6-10 p.m. Saturday at 950 N.W. Carkeek Park Road. Children ages 6-16 will form teams, accompanied by one adult per team, then use a provided map to locate people throughout the park who will share information and challenges relating to the “Twilight” series, such as bats, wolves and twilight. The hunt will be followed by “fire, food, and frolicking.” Reservations were requested by Aug. 7, but if you missed your chance, there will be additional “Twilight” adventures through Seattle Parks and Recreation. Read more about it on the department’s Parkways.
  • Cycling families eagerly awaiting the addition of bike lanes on Roosevelt can quench their thirst at the Fiets of Parenthood Family Cycling Extravaganza from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at John Stanford International School, 4057 Fifth Ave. N.E. This free event will feature a kids’ bike skills race, a parent/child family bike obstacle course, a bike decoration station and a bike raffle for a stylish cargo bike from Globe Bicycles, with proceeds to benefit Bikeworks in South Seattle. There will be chances to see and try family-friendly bicycles, from Xtracycle sport-utility-bikes, to MADSEN “precious cargo bikes,” Dutch bakfiets box bikes, trailers and front/rear child seat solutions.
